Six Local Events to Celebrate Fall in Central Maine

October is one of those months that reminds us how lucky we are to live in Central Maine. The leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler and local calendars are filling up with craft fairs, seasonal traditions and plenty of Halloween fun.

Whether your ideal fall day includes supporting local artists, trying something new or enjoying a few scares, there is something happening close to home. Here are six local events worth adding to your October plans.

Wabanaki Artisan Celebration

Saturday, October 10 | 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
Castonguay Square, downtown Waterville

Experience a vibrant day of Wabanaki culture, creativity and community. This free, all-ages celebration will feature storytelling, drumming, birch-bark etching, a film screening and an artisan market showcasing Wabanaki makers.

AYCC Annual Craft Fair

Saturday, October 17 | 8 a.m.–1 p.m.
Alfond Youth & Community Center, 126 North Street, Waterville

The AYCC Craft Fair features handmade gifts, seasonal décor, baked goods, raffles and local vendors. Admission is free, and your visit supports an organization serving area children and families.

Maine Fermentation Festival

Saturday, October 17 | 11 a.m.–5 p.m.
Downtown Waterville

Celebrate Maine’s food traditions with local producers, demonstrations, workshops and tastings. This free festival is a fun opportunity to try something new and learn about everything from sourdough and cheese to fermented vegetables and beverages.

Nightmare on Main Street

Saturday, October 24 | 4–6 p.m.
Main Street, downtown Waterville

Downtown Waterville will become a family-friendly Halloween destination with Trunk or Treat, pumpkin carving and other seasonal activities. The Dancing Witches will close out the event with a performance at 5:45 p.m.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Saturday, October 24 | 8 p.m.
Waterville Opera House, 1 Common Street, Waterville

Continue the Halloween fun with a special screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show featuring original cast member Patricia Quinn, who played Magenta. The evening will include a live shadow cast, audience participation and a costume contest.

Tickets start at $53, and a portion of ticket fees supports the Youth Arts Access Fund.

Trails of Terror

Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31 | 6–9 p.m.
Camp Tracy, 152 Camp Tracy Meadows, Oakland

Brave the haunted trails filled with creepy characters and unexpected scares—or visit the non-scary Halloween Village with younger children. This AYCC fundraiser also includes spooky concessions and continues Sunday, November 1.

AYCC is also looking for volunteers to help bring the event to life. Volunteering is a fun way to enjoy the Halloween atmosphere while giving back to an organization serving local children and families.
